pending 21 days at ISIS International Activist School for me, is life time learning experience! This three week course is designed for re-examine advocacy tools on addressing the issue of Gender Based Violence (GBV) by using development communication strategies.
About the ISIS , The ISIS School is wonder it self! Isis International was founded in Rome , Italy in 1974 and moved its office to Manila , Philippines in 1991. For 36 years, Isis International has been working through media and information and communications technologies (ICTs) towards achieving women’s human rights and facilitating networking and information sharing of women’s movements in the global South.
Those 21 days have Collective learning experience along with 24 participants from 11 countries, exchange experience on addressing issue GBV within a multi-cultural setting, exploring new perspectives and frameworks in understanding GBV, field visits to various organizations and learn about existing and emerging practices, sharing on organizational development strategies for strengthened institutional practice, understanding the role of development feminist. Participants also have practical training on the use of key communication tools for advocacy campaigns for the 16 days of activism and beyond.
During the Isis International Activist School , I presented country report to share the specific challenges, issues, campaigns and strategies around gender-based violence.
While sharing country specific experienced of GBV, I got the opportunity to explain the organizational strategies as what SPO does. I formulated an advocacy plan and a Documentary (Docu-Drama) has been produced on sexual harassment as GBV issue.
In week one, Theoretical ground on GBV was established, the facilitator Jane Real elaborated time line about key policy shifts & international conventions addressing the issue along with social movements across the globe.
The historical shift of women rights movements from Violence against women (VAW) to Gender –Based Violence (GVB) as:
1970s to 1980s Women Rights as Human Rights.
1980s to 1990s From silence to recognition of violence against women (VAW)
1990s to 2000s From VAW to GBV
Gender based violence is an umbrella term; it refers to violence targeted to a person because of their gender. GBV as not only VAW but rather a more includes violence against men between men & women.
During the time periods mentioned above, what was happening at international level and what signatory states going to address this issue? It was a magical exercise by reviewing the time line and the time period achievements that make realized the significance and importance of every step and effort being made at every level (personal, organizational, networks, state & international) for gradually achieving ultimate goal.
On second week of the course which based on plenary sessions, Ms. Mira Ofreneo, in her session discuss different eco systems & gender philosophy.
Ms. Susana facilitated development activist to work deeply on organizational development strategies, examine organizational, cultural behavior, share basic feminist principal, set own principal respective of your culture and norms never the less, how feminist principal with in organizational structure .Ms. Yipping make understand feminist development communication, review the frame work of media & how to use alternative tools and produce things own self.
